"They are just a couple of little surface spots, not a big deal. I'll just grab a cleaning product (hopefully Spot Out) and take care of it. That will get rid of the spot and any odors they may be causing...right?"
That statement is partially correct. Cleaning what you see will possibly get rid of the spot, but if it is a spot that is putting off an odor (pet urine), then there may be more to it than you can see. When we spill liquids, or our pets use the restroom on our carpets, the bigger issue can lie on the back side of the carpet and the padding more so than the surface fibers. This is more of a concern when odors are involved or we have an issue with a spot that continues to return. This can be called an "iceberg illusion", where the spot on the back side, or underneath side is much larger than that on the surface. Take a look at the images below to get an idea. We used a synthetic sports drink for visual purposes.
In the images above, we see that if all we did was treat the spot on the surface, with intentions of getting rid of the odor that it is putting off, we would miss quite a bit and more than likely have an odor that remained. Now, one spot like this isn't likely to put off much of an odor, but our pets rarely ever only go one time in the house and never again. So you can imagine, if there are multiple spots like this one through out a room or house, and we only treat the surface; that leaves a lot of urine deposits behind to continue putting off odors.
If these spots are located in a corner, we are more than likely able to pull the carpets up and treat both sides, but if the spots are more centralized in the room we have to guesstimate and treat them the best we can. A product must reach the source of the odor to be effective. To do this, we mix up the proper products and saturate the area allowing contact to the entire spot, giving the cleaning agent time to work (dwell time), and then using the proper tools to extract and rinse the urine and its components. Once we are able to do this, we are able to not only remove the spot (assuming the fibers have not been discolored), but the odor as well.
